Claude API Message Threads allows for developers to build faster and more responsive AI agents. They are a feature released on the 2nd November 2026 as part of their public beta that allows developers to not have to repeat the whole conversation for each API call. This helps reduce the communication overhead in longer Claude interactions without altering how Claude handles or charges for tokens.
TL;DR:
Claude API Message Threads can be used by developers to pass a conversation once and then send new messages and the previous response ID. This has resulted in Anthropic stating they have seen a reduction in median time to first tokens by around 35% for large Claude Code conversations. However, they will expire after 5 minutes of inactivity, won’t reduce the cost of tokens and need effective handling of the conversation history.

What are Claude API Message Threads?
The Claude API Message Threads are a beta feature of the Claude Messages API from Anthropic. They allow for temporary conversation history to be maintained on the server.
Typically, developers will repeat past messages, tool responses and instructions when an AI agent is required to provide further responses.
Message Threads make this easier.
Key Features:
- Temporarily store conversation history.
- Only send new messages.
- Refer back to previous messages using message IDs.
- Eliminate duplicate data transmissions.
- Allow complex, long running AI workflows.
As stated in the official announcement from Anthropic, the main aim of this feature is to increase response times in high context conversations.
Why Do Traditional AI Agent Conversations Become Slower?
AI Agents often perform tasks by having several interactions.
For example, a coding assistant would analyse files, find problems, recommend solutions and then check.
This will add further dialogue history.
Performance issues:
- Large amounts of data sent each time. Every request may have the full dialogue history included.
- Request size increases. With tool responses and documents the request can be large.
- Processing becomes slower. The API has to process previous content multiple times.
- Response times can be increased. The user may have long waits for a response.
These can be noticed more in larger AI Agent Development projects.
How Do Claude API Message Threads Work?
On subsequent requests we will just send the new message and include the previous response ID.
{
“thread”: { “type”: “continue”, “previous_message_id”: “MESSAGE_ID” }
}
The API will then rebuild the conversation and return a response.
Keeping track of latest response ID
Every response will include an ID that should be used to continue the thread. As there is no persistent storage on the servers, we need to make sure we keep track of the conversation.
How can developers use Claude API message threads?
It is best practice to follow the below steps.
5 Steps to implement Claude API
- Enable access to the API. Setup authentication and select a Claude model.
- Enable the beta. Add the message-threads-2026-08-12 beta header.
- Create the first thread. Send your opening message(s) with the thread type set to create.
- Send additional requests. Send new messages and include the previous message ID.
- Handle errors. Rebuild the conversation if the thread is no longer available.
If you are using Anthropic’s SDK you can also look at their official thread helper. This will handle continuing the thread and some replaying scenarios.
Look at the Claude Message Threads documentation to see what parameters are supported and examples of how to implement them.
How Much Performance Improvement Can Developers Expect?
Anthropic reports a measurable improvement in Claude Code workloads involving conversations between 500,000 and 1 million tokens.

This is based on Anthropic’s claims.
If you were using an AI code assistant with lots of files and tools then it might help to keep requests small. But I would definitely check how much the latency improves when incorporating Message Threads. It will depend on what your use case is.
What Limitations Should Developers Know?
Message Threads have some key limitations.
- 5 minute expiry: Threads will expire after 5 minutes of inactivity.
- Short term storage: Data is removed from a thread after 1 hour since the last usage.
- No access to list/read/delete: There is no API for accessing threads.
- No ZDR compatible: Threads are not appropriate for applications that require ZDR.
- Not fully compatible: Some context and compliance settings aren’t supported
- Append only: You cannot edit previous messages in a thread.
If you get an error and cannot continue with your thread then I would suggest creating a new thread whilst including the conversation history.
How Do Message Threads Compare With Prompt Caching?
Claude API Message Threads and prompt caching solve different problems.

Reduce repeated uploads |
Reuse previously processed context |

I would recommend that if your workload can make use of this feature you should make use of Message Threads with Claude prompt caching.
You will need to set up prompt caching manually as it is not enabled automatically by Message Threads.
Which AI Agents Benefit Most From Message Threads?
This feature won’t necessarily apply to all applications.
However I would recommend using it for any workloads that have high frequency interactions and require lots of conversation history.
Use Cases
- Code agents – Keep context during multi file code review and editing.
- Computer use agents – Manage ongoing workflows with screenshots and tool outputs.
- Document assistants – Long documents can be processed with multiple requests.
- Research agents – Findings can be organised with multiple tool interactions.
- Customer Support Automation – Ongoing multi step support sessions can be continued.
Claude AI Agents created using various AI Agent Frameworks can benefit from this depending on how they support the required API functionality.
Simple single request chatbots may not see much of an improvement.
Conclusion
Using Claude API Message Threads is a practical way to improve the responsiveness of long running AI applications. I would recommend testing this to ensure it can handle real conversations, keep an eye on the time to first token, keep full conversation logs and ensure it meets any compliance requirements.
